“Bakit nag-hearing ang Senate? Ano’ng purpose? Parang nag-a-attendance sa ABS. ‘Hello, I’m here, I’m for you.’ Di ba? (Why did the Senate hold a hearing? What’s the purpose? It’s like having their attendance checked at ABS. ‘Hello, I’m here, I’m for you.’ Right?)” Cayetano told reporters in an interview.
“Kasi sabi nila it’s not for the franchise [renewal], kasi hindi pa sila pwedeng mag-hearing sa franchise, nandito pa (They’re saying it’s not about franchise renewal, because they can’t hear about the franchise yet, it’s still here at the House level). So what’s it for?” he asked.
While ABS-CBN’s operation franchise is set to expire on May 4 this year, according to Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra, the House, through the committee on legislative franchises, really only has until March 11 to act on the pending measures because Congress will go on summer recess after that and sessions won’t resume until May 3.
Cayetano, himself a former multi-term senator, couldn’t help but express his disdain at how the network’s supporters have supposedly gone overboard in making a case for the renewal of its franchise.
“There’s no question there are solid supporters of ABS. But ‘yung iba ano eh, OA na eh. Parang doomsday na ang ginagawa para lang makapagsipsip, eh. Eh hindi ‘yun ang proseso (Other supporters have been over-acting. They’re presenting doomsday scenarios just to suck up. That is not the process),” he said, without naming anybody in particular.
The Taguig-Pateros representative reiterated that the power to grant a franchise “shall exclusively originate from the House [of Representatives].”
